NEW PROVIDENCE / NASSAU |
| |
| Island Facts & General Information |
For centuries New Providence Island has been the hub of the Bahamas, where "everyone" went, and "everything" happened. Small as it is, 21 miles (34 km) long by 7 miles (11 km) wide; it is the Bahamas' most populous island, being home to over 200,000 residents, over a third of the total Bahamian population. New Providence has the country's busiest airport, hundreds of homes owned by foreign investors, and two concentrations of resort development on Cable Beach and Paradise Island. |
The capital of The Bahamas, the historic city of Nassau is a 55-minute flight from Miami. Despite the development and the modern hotels, a laid-back tropical atmosphere still pervades the city, and it still offers a good dose of colonial charm. The commercial and banking hub of The Bahamas, as well as a mecca for shoppers, Nassau lies on the north side of New Providence. |
