RUM CAY

Island Facts & General Information
rum cay bahamas

Rum Cay measures a mere 30 square miles, has no Government airport or airline service, is sundered from nearest neighbors by 20 miles of ocean, and is home to less than 100 who live in its one settlement Port Nelson. In the 1700s and 1800s, there was a colony that boasted prosperous farms and orchards, fat livestock, and a significant industry shipping a quarter-million tons of salt in its 1852 peak year. The miniature land mass also was a vital "last chance" layover for seamen to stock up on fresh foods, water and supplies before heading eastward across the Atlantic.
